WHY I WROTE THIS STORY

I’m a weirdo. And because I’m weird, I like to look for the unusual—particularly in history.

When I was a young boy, one of my first encounters with history came at my grandparents’ house. We went there one night for dinner—consumed at an unremarkable, rickety table that barely had room for four, vinyl upholstered seats.

After dinner, we returned to the living room where my grandparents sat in their lounge chairs, and my brother Erik and I perused the books on a shelf in the corner.

Erik soon lost interest, and went back to playing with toys. But I found two volumes that—unbeknownst to me at the time—would change my life.

One was a book about the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, a subject that still fascinates me to this day.

The other was a book about lost American outlaw treasure. It contained dozens of chapters about real loot stolen and hidden throughout the country by some of the most infamous American outlaws in history. And it also contained the supposed clues for how to find those treasures.

I was hooked immediately.

I found myself dreaming of what it would be like to unravel the clues and track down lost loot. In fact, the first “story” I ever wrote was a treasure map I drew on a piece of notebook paper and handed to a neighbor kid. I even burned the edges of the paper to make it look authentic (even though the blue lines were still clearly there).

The map led to a tin box I buried in the yard. I don’t think he bought the whole idea, but it was fun anyway.

Fast forward to high school where I took a keen interest in history, particularly World History and American Presidents. Even though I majored in psychology in college, I took extra history classes because I loved them.

That love of history, and the unknown, combined with a passion for action-packed adventure stories, led me to create the Sean Wyatt series, and now the Relic Runner series.

THE COURIER

I wanted to create an action series that still had the elements of historical mysteries built into it. Enter Dak Harper, a former Delta Force operator who, like me, loves history.

The premise of this series is simple. There are missing artifacts, masterpieces, and relics from throughout history all over the world. Some are hidden in plain sight. Others kept in secret.

The antiquities and rare art black markets play host to transactions for such items, and when money changes hands, there is always a trail.

For The Courier, I scoured through history—as I do with all my stories—to find the unusual, an object that books and teachers forgot. What I found was the lost sword of the conquistador, Francisco Pizarro.

The legend of Pizarro’s death is an interesting one, but the location of his prized sword—the one he died wielding—has remained a mystery to this day.

My job as a writer, fan of history, and a weirdo, is to show you one of the possible locations of this priceless artifact.

STORY SYNOPSIS

The United States Army created him. Now he's a vigilante hunting for black market artifacts.

Out of work and on the run after a shocking betrayal by his brothers-in-arms, the ex-Special Forces commando hasn’t stopped moving for months. He can’t. Some of the same soldiers who left him for dead in the Middle East still want his head. And as long as Dak's alive, they know they will never be safe.

Fate intervenes when an eccentric young millionaire offers Dak a gig hunting down stolen artifacts. The catch? His first assignment is to recover a priceless item that's in the possession of the most fear cartel boss in Peru.

This cartel doesn't just smuggle drugs, though. They have diversified into illegal gold mining, and human trafficking.

Dak finds himself caught between doing his job, and helping the people of the slums outside of Lima, whose suffering and squalor goes largely unnoticed by any developed nation's media. He learns of their plight through an unlikely introduction to a small boy named Hector. A bond is forged, and Dak knows he can't ignore what's happening.

With a corrupt mayor in the back pocket of the cartel, Dak is in for the toughest fight of his life to help the people of Lima, and recover an artifact that once belonged to the famed conquistador, Francisco Pizarro.
